Garden on the rock

Giardino di una casa al mare

Location Sperlonga, Italy

Year 2016

Description In the ancient town of Sperlonga and with a splendid view of the sea, the inaccessible surroundings of an old house carved into the rock presented a challenge: to soften the different levels and establish a garden in it’s place. The concrete paving becomes a table, a bench, an informal seat and steps. A winding iron staircase climbs up to the house. Rocks and fixed furnishings merge into a single element: a welcoming rock. In choosing the planting scheme, inspiration was taken from the lush, pre-existing vegetation, proposing the addition of typical Mediterranean shrubs which bloom alternately creating splashes of colour. Fragrant roses of differing varieties climb an iron pergola giving shade.
