Roof garden

Terrazza sul tetto a Roma

Location Rome, Italy

Year 2021

Description The roof of an elegant early 20th century building in Rome's Nomentano neighbourhood is transformed into a private terrace while retaining access from the condominium staircase. The generous surface area available, about 160 square metres, is completely unobstructed and has a panoramic view from all four sides, being completely detached from the existence of the flat, and suggests from the outset a decisive choice to treat the space as a garden and not as a terrace.

In fact, in rethinking the paving, large portions are occupied by pools of herbaceous and grass plants. The containers, with their varying depths, re-proportion the use of the terrace space by immersing it in greenery whilst pushing the windowsill into the background. A photovoltaic pergola and a kitchen-bar enhance the usability of the roof garden.
